In Richard’s Words
This pawnshop consulting testimonial is about far more than financial performance or operational improvement. It is the story of how a professional engagement between Richard Dan of Kamaaina Loan and Jerry Whitehead of Pawnshop Consulting Group developed into a lasting friendship built upon trust, service and the Hawaiian spirit of ʻohana.
Decades ago, my family was hit by tragedy, and I was unable to run the business. I hardly knew Jerry, but I called him—and he showed up. Within two weeks, he was on Maui helping me keep everything going.
Jerry helped manage our daily operations, rebuild our systems, streamline our eBay business and change how I viewed inventory. He taught me that I wasn’t a curator in a museum—I was a retailer, and inventory had to move. That lesson changed the way I operated my business.
His initial fee was recovered within weeks through the additional profit he helped generate. Retail performance returned strongly, and our pawn balances more than tripled. Every visit brought practical improvements to our displays, advertising, technology, team structure and store culture.
But Jerry’s impact went beyond profit. He gave me breathing room during one of the most difficult periods of my life.
Working with Jerry has never felt transactional. In Hawaii, relationships and ʻohana matter. Jerry became family. He brings genuine experience, practical judgment and measurable results.
Jerry Whitehead is the real deal in the pawn business. The guy is terrific, and I recommend him without hesitation.

Jerry’s Reflection
Maui has always held a special place in my life. I lived on the island during the 1980s, when I operated a sound-production company, although Richard and I did not know each other then.
Since our original consulting engagement, I have returned to Maui several times and have always made it a point to spend time with Richard. He has graciously opened his home and other accommodations to me and our friends, and I have continued to support him whenever possible—not as a consultant billing for my time, but as a friend and brother.
Richard knows that he has access to me by telephone, Zoom or whatever means necessary, virtually anytime he needs me. That is what ʻohana means to us: family.
What began as a professional relationship became a lifelong friendship, and I remain deeply grateful for it.

Pawnshop Consulting Testimonial: What Meaningful Consulting Should Deliver
The most meaningful consulting relationships are not built upon reports, recommendations or spreadsheets alone. They are built when someone is willing to step into a difficult situation, understand what is really happening and remain personally committed to helping the business and its people move forward.
Richard’s experience illustrates the practical results that disciplined pawnshop consulting can produce. Inventory began moving more effectively, retail performance improved, pawn balances grew substantially, online sales became more efficient and the store developed stronger systems and team accountability. Just as importantly, those improvements gave Richard greater control of the business and the breathing room he needed during a difficult period for his family.
That combination of operational knowledge and personal commitment remains central to PCG’s approach. Every pawnshop has its own history, market, people and challenges. Effective consulting therefore requires more than applying a standard formula. It requires listening carefully, studying the numbers, identifying missed opportunities and helping ownership implement changes that can be measured over time.
For Jerry Whitehead, the relationship with Richard also demonstrates something equally important: the best professional relationships can become lifelong personal relationships. The original engagement produced measurable financial results, but the trust created through that work continued long after the invoices ended.
Today, Richard remains more than a former client. He is a trusted friend and part of Jerry’s extended ʻohana—a relationship strengthened through years of conversations, visits, shared experiences and continued support.
Richard’s story demonstrates how measurable business improvement, personal commitment and lasting trust can come together in one relationship.
For PCG, this pawnshop consulting testimonial reflects the measurable results and enduring relationships that define meaningful client service.
